Local Laws:

Most sections of California law prohibit discrimination based on a long list of protected classes, including sexual orientation, gender and gender identity. LGBT Californians are protected from discrimination in securing employment and housing, accessing government services and participating in state-funded activities. LGBT people are also protected under the state’s hate crime law.

Housing Policy:

Incoming on campus students are often assigned to same gender housing based on gender markers in housing applications, but if the student would prefer a different type of housing, they can contact the Housing & Residence Life Office. Gender neutral housing is available on a case by case basis to any student housed on campus.

Special Interest Housing:

Living learning communities are in the Sandhu Residence Center including halls focused on the environment, global issues, business, the arts, outdoor activities and more, but as yet none focus on LGBT issues.

Courses and Programs of Study:

There's an LGBTQ Studies Minor available in the course catalog. The website lists it as the LGB Studies Minor, but it has just been updated to include T&Q. http://www.chapman.edu/wilkinson/interdisciplinary-minors/glbt-studies.aspx

Fraternities and Sororities:

Greek Life includes approximately 38% of all students. The Greek Advisor is a trainer for the Safe Space Program and developed a Greek Allies Program in conjunction with Safe Space offered to Greeks 2-3 times per semester.

Health Insurance:

Unknown if the school's health insurance policy provides coverage for any transition related care, but health insurance is required for all students - but it does not have to be the University health insurance. Students can opt out if they can provide proof of health insurance from another source.

Records and Identity Documents

Registrar's Office:

Setting up a meeting with the Registrar's Office is all that is required to change one's name on transcripts, degrees, and official academic records in addition to changing one's ID card and email address. There are no requirements for changing gender markers in most University records and the process is quite simple, but Financial Aid and any medical records require a legal name and gender marker change to alter information within those systems.

Student ID Card:

During the meeting with the Registrar's Office, approval for updating the ID Card is given and a student can quickly go and take a new picture and receive a new card as soon as those records are updated.

School Email:

Once the Registrar's records are updated, a student only needs to contact IS&T to update their email address.

Religious and Spiritual Organizations:

The Interfaith Center is an affirming space for LGBT students and all staff members have been trained through the Safe Space Program. Programs such as Reading the Bible Through Queer Eyes are hosted there, and there are numerous student clubs representing various faith backgrounds. The school has historical ties to Disciples of Christ which is an LGBT affirming Christian sect, and the spirit of DOC that is still connected with the University is very open and affirming of LGBT identities.
