While there is not a written housing policy relating specifically to transgender issues, transgender students are allowed to live on either male or female residence floors. The Residential Life staff are available to work with students to ensure their housing needs are met.

Facilities:

There are single-occupancy gender neutral restrooms available in most of the buildings on campus. A map of the available single occupancy restrooms are located on the Minnesota State University, Mankato LGBT Center's website at: http://www.mnsu.edu/lgbtc/comingouttrans.html.

There are private showers available in the campus recreation locker rooms, but the locker rooms and changing areas are separated by gender. Those locker rooms are available to students in the Otto Recreation Center.

Courses and Programs of Study:

While there are not courses regularly offered that speak specifically to transgender issues, courses offered in the Gender and Women's Studies department are inclusive. More specifically, GWS 225, Introduction to LGBT Studies is regularly offered and covers transgender issues extensively.

Records and Identity Documents

Registrar's Office:

The academic records do have a gender marker on them and matches your current legal documentation. If you have changed your gender marker or name legally, your academic records can also be changed to your preferred name or gender marker.

Course Management System:

Our campus uses Desire 2 Learn. This system uses your legal name that matches your current legal documentation. If you have changed your gender marker or name legally, your academic records can also be changed to your preferred name or gender marker.

Student ID Card:

The campus ID card's matches your current legal documentation. If you have changed your gender marker or name legally, your name on your student ID can also be changed.

School Email:

The school's email matches your current legal documentation. If you have changed your name legally, your email can also be changed. Students do have the option to forward their campus email to an Internet based email provider. This would allow them use an email address of their choosing, but emails sent by faculty and administrators are sent to their school email, which reflects student's current legal name.

On-Campus Resources

Student/Staff Groups:

The Minnesota State University, Mankato LGBT Center has two weekly student groups that are open to all. One is Team MSQ which takes place Tuesday at 5pm in the LGBT Center (CSU 194). Team MSQ is a general leadership and planning group that occasionally covers transgender issues.

Gender Blur is a transgender support and leadership group that meets Thursday at 5pm in the LGBT Center (CSU 194). This group is additionally open to everyone.

Being Ethnic and Queer (BEAQ) is a group that supports a community of empowered LGBTQQIA individuals of diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds through a social justice framework to enhance lives and communities at MSU and beyond.

Resource Center:

Minnesota State University, Mankato has a LGBT Center that provides services, community,and support for transgender students on the campus and in the Mankato community. The LGBT Center is located in the Centennial Student Union in room 194. The phone number is 507-389-5131 and website is http://www.mnsu.edu/lgbtc/

Academic Departments:

The Gender and Women's Studies department (http://sbs.mnsu.edu/women/) are a great resource for transgender students. The office is located in Morris Hall 109.

Trainings and Workshops:

The LGBT Center offers two Transgender 101 trainings (http://www.mnsu.edu/lgbtc/transgendertraining.html) during the academic year. The workshop gives participants a basic understanding of transgender issues, what it means to be part of the campus, and acquire skills and knowledge to more effectively work with and understand transgender concerns.
